How to Know If Your Child Is Too Sick for School

It’s a question many parents on Maui face early in the morning: Is my child too sick to go to school today? At Frank R. Baum, MD, Inc., we understand the decision isn’t always simple. You want to avoid spreading illness and support your child’s recovery, but also keep them on track academically. Here are some guidelines to help you make the right call.

Watch for Contagious Symptoms

If your child has a fever over 100.4°F, vomiting, diarrhea, or a frequent, wet-sounding cough, it’s usually best to keep them home. These are signs that your child could spread illness to classmates and that their body needs time to rest. Other signs to watch for include a painful sore throat with fever, pink eye(s), or a new rash, especially if it’s itchy or spreading.

Consider Their Energy Level

Some kids bounce back quickly from mild sniffles, while others seem wiped out by the same symptoms. If your child seems unusually tired, irritable, or unable to concentrate, they may not be up for the school day. A lack of appetite, poor sleep, or complaints of body aches can also signal the need for a day of rest.

Consider the School’s Health Policies

Each school has specific rules about when to stay home. In most cases, your child should be fever-free for at least 24 hours without medication before returning to school. Schools may also require children with certain infections, like strep throat or conjunctivitis, to be on antibiotics for at least 24 hours before going back.

Use Your Judgment (and Ours)

Trust your instincts. You know your child best. If something seems off, give our Kahului office a call. We’re happy to help you decide whether to keep them home, send them in, or schedule a visit. If your child is having frequent absences due to illness, we can also help look for issues that may be affecting their health.

When to Call Dr. Baum

If your child has persistent or worsening symptoms, difficulty breathing, dehydration, or a high fever that doesn’t come down with medication, don’t wait. Contact Frank R. Baum, MD, Inc. right away. We’re here to support families throughout Maui with compassionate, accessible care.

Helping Your Child Stay Healthy

Good handwashing, regular sleep, a balanced diet, and staying up to date on vaccines all help reduce the number of sick days your child needs. If you have additional questions about keeping your child healthy during cold and flu season, we’re always here to help. Get your flu vaccination early in the season. Call the office to schedule an appointment. We will send a text message announcing the dates of our weekend flu shot clinics. Be on the look out for the announcement soon.
